How Our Period Calculator Works

Based on Menstrual Cycle Science

Our calculator is built on established medical knowledge about the menstrual cycle. The average menstrual cycle consists of two main phases: the follicular phase (from menstruation to ovulation) and the luteal phase (from ovulation to the next period). While the follicular phase can vary significantly between women and cycles, the luteal phase is remarkably consistent at approximately 14 days for most women.

Medical Calculation Method

Our algorithm uses the "reverse calculation" method recommended by gynecologists. Instead of adding 14 days to your last period start date, we subtract 14 days from your predicted next period start date to estimate ovulation. This method is more accurate because the luteal phase length is more consistent than the follicular phase across different women and cycle lengths.

Accuracy & Reliability

For women with regular cycles (varying by 3 days or less), our calculator achieves approximately 85-90% accuracy for next period prediction. Ovulation estimates are accurate within 1-2 days for about 70-80% of women with regular cycles. These statistics are comparable to professional fertility tracking methods and significantly more reliable than calendar-counting approaches.
